Job Summary
- Police Officer: To enforce the law, provide service, information, and aid to citizens as circumstances require, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders.
- Cadet: To attend and satisfactorily complete a Basic Peace Officer Course, qualifying for commissioning as a peace officer of The University of Texas System Police.
Salary as commensurate
- $62,000 – Starting (cadet)
- $63,000 – After successful completion of TCOLE basic peace officer course
- Police Officer I – $65,000
- Police Officer II – $72,000
- Police Officer III – $75,000
- Police Officer IV – $79,000
- Lateral officers (prior experience) may be compensated based upon prior experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Police Officer: The officer is to perform law enforcement duties on the property under the control and jurisdiction of the University of Texas System.
- Preserve the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime.
- Execute all lawful processes.
- An officer is to arrest offenders with or without a warrant when authorized by law.
- Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals and recover stolen or lost property.
- Prepare various written reports narrating law enforcement and police activities.
- In addition, an officer must confer with local enforcement, criminal justice, and emergency response agencies on matters of mutual interest.
Cadet: Attends classes, maintains comprehensive notebooks, and completes homework assignments.
- Participates in the physical training program, firearms training, defensive tactics program, and practical problems to demonstrate the following required abilities:
- Necessary strength and agility to subdue and restrain persons resisting arrest, including the proper use of handcuffs and other restraining devices.
- Adequate hand, arm, and upper body strength and ability to safely operate a handgun and/or a weapon with either hand and qualify with the same on a prescribed course.
- Necessary agility and endurance to pursue violators on foot; ability to scale a reasonable barrier or obstruction while in foot pursuit of violators, to include running up and down flights of stairs.
- Ability to remove an injured or unconscious person of reasonable size from an area of danger.
- Ability to safely operate an automobile on a public street or highway without the use of any specialized equipment peculiar only to the operator while utilizing the police radio and emergency equipment such as siren and emergency lights.
- Actively participates in classroom discussions and groups’ projects and demonstrates the ability to apply knowledge gained in the Basic Police Officer Course.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Qualifications
- Possess a current basic TCOLE License.
- Two (2) years of law enforcement experience.
- Thirty (30) hours of college or more from an accredited college or university.
- Experience working in a higher education or equivalent environment.
Other Requirements
- Must be able to pass the required UT System physical fitness test.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Criminal history must not contain any felonies or misdemeanors above a class C within the last ten years (Does not include traffic violations).
Salary/Compensation: $65,000 - $79,000 per year
