The Forming Engineer position is responsible to provide technical expertise to solve complicated stamping problems and provide customer support, while contributing and maintaining Arcelor Mittal’s long-term technical leadership in this field. This position also identifies and manages the implementation of material and process cost savings opportunities in customer stamping plants throughout North America as well as assisting in achieving a number one rating in overall customer technical support. Specific duties will include: (1) Determine the stamping process needs for future and existing sheet metal products; (2) Provide forming support to customers during pre-launch/early vendor involvement (EVI), production and troubleshooting events using ARGUS (optical forming analysis tool), manual CGA (circle grid analysis) and local formability analysis tools; (3) Provide customers with support on die-development for Arcelor Mittal products and awarded parts; (4) Prepare detailed reports based on forming analysis performed in the customer stamping facility and recommend necessary tooling modifications; (5) Support qualification of new/transfer Arcelor Mittal parts at North American customers by working cross-functionally with Arcelor Mittal quality and sales team; (6) Work with AM Technical Service Team and provide quick and cost-effective solutions to mitigate customer claims; (7) Utilize knowledge regarding experimental tests and 3D Digital Image Correlation technique and work with AM Application Technology Team to develop data necessary for EVI forming analysis for customer-specific grades; (8) Collaborate with AM Steel Solutions group to develop Finite Element Analysis (FEA) material cards at customer request; (9) Investigate and implement cost savings solutions and manufacturing process improvement ideas for North American customers to facilitate growth of Arcelor Mittal steel business; (10) Maintain an expert level of industry knowledge regarding automotive steel grades, stamping processes and forming analysis techniques to resolve complex stamping issues; and (11) Ensure a long-term technical leadership position relative to our competition by identifying industry stamping trends and initiating and executing. This position requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Engineering, Integrated Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field and 2 years related experience. Must also have 12 months of experience with each of the following: 1) Advanced manufacturing (stamping and hydroforming) processes, its analysis and optimization using ARGUS (optical forming analysis tool) and thickness analysis tools; 2) Material-press interaction, tool-die and press conditions, lubrication and parameters affecting forming process; 3) Handling mechanical test equipment (Tensile Testing Machine, Hydraulic Press), conducting tension tests and using 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system for correlating the mechanical steel properties; 4) Interpreting Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Forming Simulation Models and optimizing forming parameters; 5) Working with the following steel/tools/technologies: Mild and AHSS Steels; Electrochemical Etching Process; ARGUS; Circle Grid Analysis (CGA); Ultrasound Thickness (UT) gauge; 3D DIC; and FEA; 6) Understanding and implementing the quality test procedures and reports for materials. Employer will accept experience gained concurrently. Experience may be also gained before, during, or after Master’s degree. Full-time position located in Franklin, TN. Telecommuting permitted one day per week. Must reside within commuting distance of Franklin, TN office. Requires travel 60% of the time within North America (50% U.S./10% Canada and Mexico) for forming analysis and supporting stamping trials in customer plants.
